- Name Our Tunnel Boring Machines
Name our tunnel boring machines!
Two massive machines are getting ready for a very big job – digging the tunnels for the Yonge North Subway Extension.
But before they begin their underground journey, there’s an important step:
They need names!
That’s where you come in.
We’re looking for creative names for our dynamic duo of tunnel boring machines, or TBMs. Your ideas could be inspired by local landmarks and history, famous people, or something meaningful to you. And because there are two machines, you can dream up a pair of names that belong together.
Think you’ve got the perfect names?
Check out the contest rules and fill out the form below to send us your ideas by November 16, 2026.
This is the cutter head: the front of a tunnel boring machine that cuts through the ground to build subway tunnels.
A panel will choose the finalist names and a list will be posted on this page so you can vote for your top choice.
If your name is chosen, you’ll get credit for the winning idea and could have the chance to meet these mammoth machines for a future photo-op at the tunnel launch shaft.
So get digging for ideas – this is your chance to be a part of transit history and leave your mark on a project that will transform travel across the region!

About the Yonge North Subway Extension
The Yonge North Subway Extension will cut commute times in York Region, Toronto and beyond by extending TTC Line 1 service approximately eight kilometres north from Finch Station to Richmond Hill, with five new stations along the way. By offering convenient connections to other local and regional transit lines, the extension will make it easier for people to leave their cars at home and take transit to get where they need to be.
