Railway

Light Rail Transit (LRT)

Metrolinx, together with the Province of Ontario, is working with the City of Toronto to deliver new, modern Light Rail Transit (LRT) along Eglinton Avenue and the Scarborough RT line.

Metrolinx will deliver the $8.18 billion Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown LRT project, including securing environmental approvals, designing, coordinating, planning, constructing and implementing. Upon completion of this work, Metrolinx will retain ownership of this transit service.

The project includes a single LRT line running just over 25 km:
• along Eglinton Avenue from approximately Black Creek Drive in the west to Kennedy Station in the east running largely in a tunnel except for sections of the Don Valley and near Black Creek and Kennedy Stations
• along the existing grade-separated guideway for the Scarborough RT between Kennedy Station and Scarborough Centre.

Other elements include up to 30 new stations, Light Rail Vehicles, maintenance and storage facilities, and rail and signal systems.

Subway Extensions

As part of the Toronto transit expansion plans, the City of Toronto will deliver extensions to the existing Sheppard subway west to Downsview subway station and east to Scarborough Centre.

The Sheppard East Project

• an 8 km extension of the existing Sheppard Subway, east from Don Mills station to Scarborough Centre at a cost of about $2.75 billion
• seven new subway stations, subway cars, maintenance and storage facilities, rail and signal systems

The Sheppard West Project

• a 5.5 km extension of the existing Sheppard Subway west from Yonge-Sheppard station to Downsview at a cost of about $1.4 billion
