Environmental Policy

Purpose

The Environmental Policy demonstrates Metrolinx’s commitment to the environment and plays a significant role in line with Metrolinx’s vision of “getting you there better, faster, easier” and its mission “to champion, develop and implement an integrated transportation system that enhances prosperity, sustainability and quality of life”. Development and operation of a sustainable transportation system will be achieved through the commitments outlined in this Environmental Policy.

Policy Statement

Metrolinx is committed to reducing our impacts on the environment and aims to continually improve our environmental performance to be a leader in environmental excellence and sustainable public transportation.

Scope & Application

The Environmental Policy applies to any individual performing work on Metrolinx property who is an employee, or on behalf of Metrolinx as a contractor. This policy also applies to Metrolinx employees working off site and/or on non-Metrolinx properties.

Metrolinx Commitments

To support Metrolinx’s vision to be a leader in environmental excellence and sustainable public transportation, Metrolinx commits to:

• Maintaining an ISO14001 Environmental Management System to promote environmental awareness, ensure compliance to environmental regulations and to drive continuous environmental improvement through setting of objectives and monitoring of performance.
• Using a risk-based approach in identifying significant environmental aspects and ensuring appropriate controls and measures are implemented to mitigate negative environmental impacts.
• Continually strive to reduce our impacts on the environment through pollution prevention, waste reduction, biodiversity preservation, and adoption of energy efficiency measures where feasible.
• Minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and striving towards a net zero carbon footprint through sustained efforts and technological innovation including decarbonization of its fleet and facilities.
• Reviewing and assessing our network to ensure climate resiliency to mitigate risks of climate change on our operations.
  Use of green building practices to the extent possible, that embrace the idea of minimizing energy consumption through smart and innovative design choices, use of sustainable materials, renewable energy generation, and technological advancement.
• Foster a circular economy and lifecycle approach where resources are used efficiently and waste generation is minimized through improved procurement processes, streamlined internal operations, and optimized recycling streams.

These commitments are integral in positioning Metrolinx as an environmental leader and are reviewed annually by the Senior Management Team to ensure effectiveness of the policy in promoting environmental excellence that will add value to Metrolinx’s employees, customers, stakeholders and society as a whole.
