Bay Street pedestrian walkway at Union Station reopens

The renovation of the pedestrian walkway on the east side of Bay Street is now open to the public.

May 26, 2021

There’s good news for people that use Union Station as the walkway on the east side of Bay Street (known as the Bay East Teamway) has reopened.

The walkway was closed in May 2020 for renovations, earlier than planned, to take advantage of lower ridership and minimize the impact construction has on high-traffic pedestrian pathways.

The walkway now features a new ceiling, renovated flooring, windows, and doors as well as improved digital signs.

The walkway is an important connection to the Union Station Bus Terminal (USBT), which opened in December, 2020.

The southern end of the Bay Street east walkway connects directly to the USBT via the ‘south portal’, an entryway from the south end of Bay Street connecting the walkway, the USBT and CIBC Square. This connection allows customers to access the USBT while construction for CIBC Square at the east corner of Bay Street and Lake Shore Blvd W closes the south portal entrance.

The walkway will be the only entrance from Bay Street into the USBT while construction takes place this summer. The main entrance to the USBT from Lake Shore Blvd. W. will remain open during this work.

Both entrances are accessible and provide access to the elevator to level two of the USBT, which connects to the Bay Street Bridge.

The walkway also provides convenient direct stair access to GO Train platforms 4 to 13, where customers can tap on and off from the stairwell entrances inside the walkway using Presto devices.

The renovation has also made the walkway slightly larger, providing even more space for customers to spread out.

The completion of this renovation marks another step towards the revitalization of Union Station and the connecting pathways which allow customers more comfortable and efficient travel.
