Rail fan captures Guelph GO train speed increase in new video

GO Train speed limits through Guelph have slowly increased over the last few months - check it out.

Dec 16, 2021

Sometimes you have to see something to believe it.

In this case, we’re talking about GO train speed limit increases in the city of Guelph.

Esteban Kuhnen, a local rail fan and Kitchener GO Line customer – decided to capture the difference a little speed makes – for himself.

The new faster speeds not only save customers time, they also mean less time people have to wait at rail crossings for trains to pass.

How fast are the trains going?

The GO train speed limits increased gradually over the course of a few months, here’s the breakdown:

•      October 25: 16 km/h to 32 km/h – (10 mph to 20 mph)

•      November 15: 32 km/h to 49 km/h – (20 mph to 30 mph)

•      December 6: 49 km/h to 73 km/h – (30 mph to 45 mph)

Next steps

Metrolinx says the increased speed limits will allow for more efficient service and better on time performance.  A travel time review will be conducted to update journey times and schedules for a future round of service changes.

Both Metrolinx and the City of Guelph are also planning further studies of rail crossings within Guelph city limits that may identify further safety enhancements that would go over and above the Transport Canada requirements for safety. Stay tuned for more information.
