Lakeshore West weekend construction for long-term improvements

Weekend service adjustments are part of a bigger plan to improve GO Train service.

Jun 26, 2023

Metrolinx’s ambitious plan to expand GO services will deliver quieter, faster, safer and more efficient service. The plan includes work along the Lakeshore West Line, from late Friday night July 7 through Sunday, July 9 to facilitate construction of a train overpass above Burloak Drive.

The work will also impact Lakeshore East Line schedules.

In the short-term, this will mean a weekend of service adjustments, with buses replacing trains between Oakville and West Harbour GO. Lakeshore East customers will have a 15 minute adjustment in their weekend schedules.

Niagara Falls train service will end at Burlington GO. Train and bus connections for routes 12, 15, 18 and 21 (westbound) will be impacted. Route 12 customers will need to travel 30 minutes ahead of their regular schedule to make all train and bus connections.

Route 88 customers will also experience a change in connection times.

Lakeshore East train trips will have a 15-minute adjustment to their weekend schedule.

Construction work that can only be done when there are no trains running on the tracks will continue into the future and is part of the GO Expansion program that will enable more frequent, two-way, all-day service.

Burloak Drive Grade Separation

To prepare for future train service increases, Metrolinx is working with the City of Burlington and the Town of Oakville to build a grade separation at Burloak Drive to allow trains to move above road traffic. The results will be a smoother ride for GO customers and better traffic flow for drivers, who will no longer need to wait for trains to pass.

This overpass for trains will be designed to accommodate future road expansion from four lanes to six, plus improvements at Superior Court and Prince William Drive and Harvester and Wyecroft Roads.

Dedicated multi use pathways will be added along the boulevard and bike lanes are being built.

Metrolinx has also been working with the City of Burlington at the Drury Lane Pedestrian Bridge to provide the current structure with a necessary upgrade.

The enhancements will improve pedestrian access.

Electrification

The GO Expansion plan will ultimately use electric trains to reduce emissions and offer more trips throughout the day, in both directions, as quickly as every 15 minutes. Work to be done over the weekend is part of this multi-year project.
