Customers in Vaughan have more seamless connections to transit with major work complete at Rutherford GO Station.  

Many amenities are open, making access to transit easier with better connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists.

Work at Rutherford GO is part of Metrolinx’s GO Expansion plan to expand transit for two-way, all-day service on the Barrie GO Line.  

Better connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists 

Pedestrians and cyclists can get to the station from either the north or south multi-use path on Rutherford Road.  

The multi-use paths also follow alongside the underpass, where vehicles travel underneath the rail bridge without interruption from trains. Customers can also access the station from Westbourne Road by foot, bike or car.

More seamless connections to transit 

More connections to transit give customers more flexibility in how they travel and where they can go.   

The kiss & ride has been upgraded with increased capacity to a total of 60 spaces.  

Customers can also catch their next train or hop on a GO Transit or York Region Transit bus at the new and improved bus loop. New covered walkways provide shelter to the new station building. 

Improved station amenities 

While customers have already been using the new modern station building and parking structure, Metrolinx crews have been busy completing major upgrades around the station including work at the platforms and pedestrian pathways.  

Here is a list of project benefits:   

• Multi-use paths and bike lanes at Rutherford Road underpass to improve connectivity to the station 
• Improved train platforms including shelters, canopies and digital displays 

• An upgraded bus loop for more seamless connections to GO Transit and York Region Transit 
• Upgraded Kiss & Ride, surface parking lot, covered pedestrian walkways and landscaping 
• Opening this summer, a pedestrian bridge over Rutherford Road and connecting pedestrian paths will provide pedestrians and cyclists with another way to access GO and municipal transit 
• To prepare for GO Expansion, a second pedestrian bridge and new east platform has been constructed and will open when additional trains are running in the future  
• A pedestrian tunnel will connect to both train platforms and will open in the future 

• An entirely new and improved Rutherford GO Station building with updated amenities including customer washrooms, digital displays and spacious waiting areas 
• New underpass on Rutherford Road allows for trains to seamlessly travel above traffic for more reliable service and enhanced safety 
• A new fully accessible six-storey parking structure with 1,200 net new parking spaces that’s connected to the station building 
• The parking structure also features 100 new secured bike parking spots that will open at a later date, bringing the total number of bike spaces to 120 at the station. 

The parking garage will connect to the east platform via pedestrian bridge in the future, when this part of the project is done. Levels 5 and 6 of the parking garage will also open later.  

Crews will remain on-site to complete minor work, such as final landscaping, fencing and clean-up activities.  

What is GO Expansion? 

Through the GO Expansion program, Metrolinx will steadily increase GO Train service over the next 10 years, leading to a minimum of 15-minute frequency in each direction along core segments of the GO rail network.   

The GO Expansion program will increase train frequency in both directions and decrease travel times. 

Service expansion on the Barrie GO Line includes creating a seamless connection to destinations in the City of Toronto, including to the future Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit route via Caledonia GO Station, and TTC’s Line 2 with a new SmartTrack GO Station at Bloor-Lansdowne, with work to support both new station projects currently underway.
