Metrolinx is making possibilities happen for youth

Our early talent programs help to build the leaders of tomorrow.

Aug 12, 2024

For Andres, a GO Expansion Sponsor Co-op at Metrolinx and Urban Planning student at the University of Waterloo, a typical day involves meeting with stakeholders, collaborating with colleagues to develop reports and internal governance pieces, and developing project solutions.

Andres found his co-op position at Metrolinx through our Early Talent Program, which has welcomed over 400 students over the past three years.

Designed for students and recent graduates, these programs offer more than just a job – they provide a gateway to a thriving career in the dynamic world of integrated transportation.

As a participant in our Early Talent Programs, you won't just be an observer; you'll be an active contributor to our mission. But that's not all – you'll have the chance to expand your professional network by connecting with a supportive community of peers and mentors who are equally passionate about making a difference.

So – what do our programs look like? Let’s look at our early talent and recent graduate opportunities.

Summer Student Program

Running from May to August each year, our summer student positions provide opportunities for students to gain valuable work experience, supporting the organization in a variety of clerical and maintenance roles. Students must be at least 15 years old before starting employment and attending school full-time with plans to return to an academic institution after their summer student work placement concludes.

Co-op Program

Metrolinx provides current students with the opportunity to apply their academic skills in a professional setting for 4-, 8- or 12-month placements across most Metrolinx divisions. Whether you're seeking a four-month experience or a more extended opportunity, our co-op positions are flexible to align with your school commitments and aspirations.

“My favourite part about working at Metrolinx are the teams I get to collaborate with and the variety of projects that I get to work on. As a Brand, Digital and Product Marketing co-op, I am always involved in interesting opportunities whether it’s filming a TikTok video with the digital team or creating a marketing advisory for a new campaign, I have found that my passion lies in brand marketing,” said Sanne, Brand, Digital and Product Marketing Co-op.

Intern Program

Our Intern Program is designed to offer recent college/university graduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working on projects that guide us forward through our collaborative and inclusive work environment.

The program consists of an annual cohort of recent graduates that start each June. Upon successful completion of the 12-month program, there is the opportunity to be offered a permanent position within the team where the internship was completed. Intern roles are open to recent graduates who have completed their studies within two years of the program start date and provide excellent work experience as well as a structured pathway to develop one's career at Metrolinx.

“My new talent position at Metrolinx allows me to explore multiple areas of the organization and receive incredible guidance from leaders across the business" said Michela, a Talent Brand and Strategy Intern. “This position makes me really excited for a future here at Metrolinx.”

New Grad Programs

Commencing each June, program participants will be hired as permanent full-time employees (providing access to Metrolinx’s employee benefits) and will progress through various job levels throughout the duration of the program. At the end of the program, participants will move into an available non-rotational position aligned to their career aspirations within their division and will continue ongoing career development.

These rotations will allow participants to benefit from experience in various teams within their division, working on a variety of projects, pulling on their strengths, and allowing for development in new areas.

We have New Grad Programs in the following areas:

Finance / Innovation & Information Technology (I&IT)

Metrolinx operates a 2-year rotational New Grad Program within our Finance/I&IT division that consists of an annual cohort of recent graduates who have completed their post-secondary studies within the past two years.

Capital Projects Group

Our Capital Projects Group operates a 4-year program with rotations occurring annually. Working as a Junior Project Manager, these rotations give the opportunity to learn and develop skills in multiple departments. This program is open to recent graduates who have completed their post-secondary studies within the past two years.

Operations-Rapid Transit

Recent engineering graduates who have completed their post-secondary studies within the past two years have the opportunity to join Metrolinx in our Engineering Development Program. Working as an Engineering Graduate Trainee, program participants partake in a 3-year program which rotates every 6 months within the division.

Megan is currently working in the Office of the Chief Engineer. “Participating in the rotational program within Engineering & Asset Management provides me with the opportunity to explore various career paths before deciding on the one that best suits my interests and strengths,” said Megan, an Engineering Graduate Trainee.
