Peel & Halton: 2024 highlights
The milestones, moments and stories that you clicked on the most this year.
Dec 27, 2024
From the progress made on the Hazel McCallion Line to PRESTO payments allowing for more seamless connections, 2024 was a big year for transit upgrades in the Peel and Halton regions.
These were just a few of the important milestones we reached this year as we work to build an affordable, integrated, and sustainable transit network that connects communities to the things that matter most.
As 2024 comes to a close, here is a look back at the top videos, articles and moments of the year – and the ones that you loved most.
Guideway construction progresses on the Hazel McCallion Line
This year saw major infrastructure and transit improvements hit Hurontario Street during the construction of the Hazel McCallion Line.
Part of that construction included lots of progress on the new elevated guideway that will cross over Highway 403, near Square One. This past year crews finished installing all of the girders – the foundational supports for tracks – for the elevated guideway. This included installations over the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 403, which was no small feat.
This progress is key to the Hazel McCallion project, which will run from Port Credit to the Brampton Gateway Terminal at Steeles Avenue and offer connections to other transit systems like MiWay, Brampton Transit and GO Transit.
Making progress on the Hazel McCallion Line
There were other exciting milestones for the Hazel McCallion Line this year.
In South Mississauga, the line's one underground station at Port Credit is coming to life — concrete has been poured to form the floors at street level.
Plus, track work is continuing, with installations complete at 33 out of 55 intersections so far, and platforms are now constructed at seven out of 18 stops. Preparations are also underway for the delivery of the Light Rail Vehicles at our Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility which is nearing completion.
Eaglewood bridge opening
In July, the bridge at Eaglewood Boulevard opened. This marked significant progress for the Hazel McCallion Line, as the bridge’s new signalized intersection helps build a connection between communities and is a huge step towards a more integrated transit system with smoother traffic flow and will allow trains to easily access Port Credit Station.
Burloak track shift
In Burlington this summer, the tracks were shifted at Burloak Drive to accommodate the construction of a new train bridge, also known as a grade separation, which will support more frequent two-way, all-day GO service on the Lakeshore West Line. This track shift gives construction crews more space for bridge construction while allowing trains to continue running along the Lakeshore West line safely.
Following community input on the Burloak Drive Grade Separation project, plans were recently announced to move forward with a four-lane detour road along Burloak Drive, providing continued access for residents and local businesses.
The grade separation will deliver several key benefits for both Oakville and Burlington, including reduced congestion and delays, and increased safety for passengers and road users.
More rush hour service on the Milton GO Line
In October, we announced exciting news for commuters on the Milton Line: more rush-hour service is on its way! These service enhancements will provide greater flexibility and convenience for riders during peak hours, reflecting our ongoing commitment to improving transit across the region.
Beyond these exciting milestones and project updates, we were thrilled this year to celebrate a transformative year for PRESTO. The transit payment system made several advancements that gave transit riders in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) more flexibility, seamless transfers and money in their pockets. The One Fare program launched in February and already over 25 million transfers have been made using One Fare, saving commuters more than $81 million collectively. In July, Metrolinx and Apple introduced PRESTO in Apple Wallet, bringing you another way to pay your fare across the region.
This year, we also continued our focus on safety, hosting events around Rail Safety Week and launching a series of videos and stories around LRT safety, and accessibility, launching a partnership with AccessNow in January and adding more transit accessibility guides on the MagnusCards app.
It’s been a busy and eventful year, full of important milestones and great moments, and we look forward to sharing more stories and updates with you in 2025. Thank you for reading Discover!
