Plans adjusted for Burloak train bridge with community input

Detour road will minimize local disruption and keep vital project moving forward.

Dec 16, 2024

In collaboration with the City of Burlington and the Town of Oakville, we will be moving forward with a four-lane detour road along Burloak Drive instead of a 14-month road closure as part of our plan to deliver the Burloak Drive Grade Separation project.

We regularly review options to balance minimizing impact to communities while delivering the best transit infrastructure solutions for the project.

This approach directly reflects the community’s desire to minimize construction impacts, providing continued access on Burloak Drive for residents and local businesses.

How the detour road will be built

The detour road will maintain traffic and pedestrian flow while allowing crews to continue critical work on the project, which supports more frequent two-way, all-day GO service on the Lakeshore West line through GO Expansion.

There are a number of steps involved in building and commissioning the four-lane detour, including:

  • Preparing the detour road by grading, scraping, leveling and building up the area to match track level.
  • Constructing drainage systems, including ditches, culverts and subdrains.
  • Building the road base with granular materials and grading for structural support.
  • Forming and pouring concrete curbs, followed by asphalt paving and compaction.
  • Installing temporary barriers, signage and pavement markings to ensure safety and proper traffic flow.
  • A weekend road closure to allow for the commissioning of the new detour road.

What this means for residents

As part of these works, intermittent shorter-term lane closures will still be required to allow for essential construction and commissioning work.

We will continue to work closely with stakeholders so access to local businesses and services are maintained throughout construction and will communicate upcoming changes well in advance to minimize any inconvenience to the community.

As for what’s happening right now? We are currently working with our contractor to finalize construction plans while continuing important work on site.

Minor preparation work will take place this year, with additional project details to become available in the new year.

Burloak train bridge benefits

The new train bridge, known as a grade separation, will deliver several key benefits for both Oakville and Burlington:

  • Reduce congestion and delays, as vehicles will no longer have to wait for trains to pass.
  • Increase safety for GO train passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles by separating a high-traffic roadway and a busy rail line.
  • Widen Burloak Drive, creating space for on-street bicycle lanes, multi-use path on both sides of the road, and the possibility to expand from four to six vehicle lanes in the future.
  • Widen the intersection and roadway at Superior Court and Prince William Drive, and minor widening improvements at Harvester and Wyecroft roads.
