The story behind this year’s Pride GO Bus

The colourful design showcases the diversity and beauty of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Since 2014, Metrolinx has introduced a Pride-themed GO Bus design each June to celebrate and commemorate Pride Month.

This month, we unveiled a new look for the 2024 Pride GO Bus. The custom-wrapped, double decker bus has been in service since June 1, and can be spotted at select regional Pride parades over the next few months.

“My inspiration came from a desire to showcase the diversity and beauty of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and how our different journeys unite us all,” says Tim Singleton, a senior integrated design specialist at Metrolinx and the designer of this year’s Pride campaign and bus wrap.

“This is my third year designing the Pride bus, and overall Pride campaign, so this year I wanted there to be an emphasis on the abundance and vibrancy of the queer community.”

“The design is made up of many different pieces of art that patchwork together to create a mosaic of patterns, textures, and colours,” says Singleton, who has designed the Pride GO Bus since 2022.

“The palette is pulled from the Pride Progress flag, and by rearranging the colours, new conversations and moments are created.”

The overall campaign “speaks to the concept of so many different people, from all walks, coming together to celebrate Pride,” says Singleton.

How is a bus wrap designed?

Designing a striking, effective bus wrap involves some special considerations, says Singleton, adding that he will often look back at past designs for inspiration and reference.

“It's about having the image be communicative, very short, very sweet,” says Singleton. He notes that the design has to be easily read and understood, even when the bus is in motion.

Scale is another important consideration.

“It's a double decker bus, so you've got to make sure that it's big, but not too big because if it's too big and you're too close, you don't actually get any of the impact of it,” says Singleton.

“It's a push and pull of trying different elements and seeing how they work together.”

Celebrating Pride year-round

Each year’s Pride-themed bus design is introduced in June, but the special edition wrapped bus will be in service for a full year.

“It doesn't go away at the end of the month,” says Singleton.

“It'll stay in the fleet for the year…and I think that's a really nice thing.”
