The milestones, moments and stories that you clicked on the most this year.
Dec 27, 2024
From preparation work beginning on the site of the future Scarborough Centre Station to completing accessibility upgrades at Eglinton GO Station, Scarborough has seen some pretty exciting milestones over the past year.
As 2024 comes to a close, let’s take a closer look at the top videos, articles and moments of the year – and the ones that you loved most.
Agincourt GO Station receives LEED Gold certification
Major upgrades were made at Agincourt GO Station this past May as part of GO Expansion. This station received track work, enhanced station accessibility and modern amenities, such as snow melting technology along the platforms.
Agincourt GO Station was designed to be sustainable and has now been formally recognized with LEED Gold certification. LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification by environmental experts at the Canada Green Building Council that a building was designed and built to achieve high performance for the environment and human health.
Demolishing the Progress Avenue bridge
Over the Labour Day weekend, construction for the Scarborough Subway Extension took a big step forward with the removal of the 8,100-tonne Progress Avenue bridge above McCowan Road, at the site of the future Scarborough Centre Station.
The bridge, which weighed approximately the same as 15 jumbo jets, was removed in a 72-hour sprint in a coordinated effort involving dozens of people and machines.
Prep work starts at site of future Scarborough Centre Station
The removal of the Progress Avenue bridge was the first step in building the future Scarborough Centre Station, one of three new stations along the Scarborough Subway Extension.
This 7.8-kilometer extension of the TTC’S Line 2 subway will deliver modern and reliable rapid transit directly to the heart of Scarborough. Once completed, more than 10,000 customers are expected to use the station at peak times.
Construction work at Eglinton GO Station to expand GO service
Our work did not stop there. We also completed important accessibility upgrades at Eglinton GO station, part of the Lakeshore East Line.
Some of these enhancements include:
- Platform canopies
- Pedestrian tunnels with elevators to stairwells and platforms
- Accessible mini platforms that enable level boarding and exiting of accessibility coaches
Kennedy Station upgrades
Kennedy Station was also a hub of activity this past year! Piling wrapped north of the station in October to support new auxiliary buildings and excavation. Construction of the West Ventilation Fan Plant has also continued, and crews have been upgrading services as we prepare to extend TTC Line 2 service farther into Scarborough.
Beyond these exciting milestones and project updates, we were thrilled this year to celebrate a transformative year for PRESTO. The transit payment system made several advancements that gave transit riders in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) more flexibility, seamless transfers and money in their pockets. The One Fare program launched in February and already over 25 million transfers have been made using One Fare, saving commuters more than $81 million collectively. In July, Metrolinx and Apple introduced PRESTO in Apple Wallet, bringing you another way to pay your fare across the region.
This year, we also continued our focus on safety, hosting events around Rail Safety Week and launching a series of videos and stories around LRT safety, and accessibility, launching a partnership with AccessNow in January and adding more transit accessibility guides on the MagnusCards app.
It’s been an eventful year in Scarborough, full of important milestones and new achievements, and we look forward to sharing more stories and updates with you in 2025. Thank you for reading Discover!
