Track work progressing at West Harbour GO

How track upgrades on the Lakeshore West line will speed up Niagara trips.

Oct 4, 2024

Significant progress is underway in Hamilton as part of the Niagara Extension, with work moving forward at West Harbour GO Station.

The ongoing work is transforming the area into a shared-use corridor that will accommodate both GO Transit and CN freight trains. A critical aspect of this transformation involves raising the existing tracks by five inches, which will support a future pocket track.

This work will take place over the weekend of October 4-6 during nighttime hours.

The construction team has already completed significant groundwork at the site, including vital upgrades such as stormwater management, soil stabilization, and sub-ballast installation, all paving the way for the new track. Once this phase is complete, a key improvement will follow — the installation of a new pocket track that will connect directly to the main rail line. This crucial upgrade will eliminate the need for trains to reverse in and out of the station, as is currently required. This change will save commuters up to 20 minutes on their journey and mean fewer delays for riders traveling through Hamilton to Niagara.

To minimize the impact on passengers, much of the work is being done during off-peak hours, including overnight and weekends.

Once the track connection is complete, it will significantly improve the travel experience for customers in the Hamilton and Niagara region.
