Union Station is getting a new passenger concourse

Metrolinx News takes a closer look at the demolition and upgrading work happening at Union Station.

Jun 5, 2023

A new modernized open concept passenger concourse is coming to Toronto’s Union Station as part of the Union Station Enhancement Project.

Once complete, GO Transit customers will enjoy a new concourse that will seamlessly connect Bay and York Streets, provide additional access points to and from the platform levels above and maintain connections into the Bay, York, and VIA concourses, Union Square and Scotiabank Arena.

So how do you construct a new passenger concourse in one of the busiest rail corridors in the country?

First, the four southernmost tracks were removed, underground utilities were relocated, and proper site delineations were installed so that demolition work could safely begin.

The existing canopies over platforms 24/25 and 26/27 were removed, followed by the concrete platforms, track beds and the stairways used to access the platforms.

Take a closer look at the demolition work that started earlier this year:

Two machines demolish the track bed and roof of the previous platform access areas to platforms 24/25 and 26/27.

A machine equipped with a hammer attachment breaks the concrete track bed into sections (right), while a second machine breaks and pulls the sections apart (left).

Previously an entrance into Union Station, demolition work has opened the roof of the old Bay Concourse.

Metrolinx is building the Union Station of tomorrow, while respecting the heritage of the past. It’s the heart of the GO network, connecting Toronto to every part of the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
