The brick façade of the old Agincourt GO Station had been a community fixture for almost 40 years – with some local customers starting careers and later retiring during that time.

Now, as construction continues with a new station building, crews have started – and are nearly finished – with demolition activities.

Improving Agincourt GO is all part of giving customers better station amenities and access to more frequent, all-day, two-way GO train service on core segments of the Stouffville line.

Agincourt’s original building interfered with the extension of the passenger platform and required removal. Check out the video below for how it all went down…to the ground.

“Whenever we see an old station come down to make way for improvements, there’s always a bit of emotion,” says Sean McCreight, Metrolinx delivery team project manager.

“But then you have to remember, that old building was once new, as the station to come will be soon enough.”

Project contractor, EllisDon, followed a safe and methodical process to deconstruct the building and protect the surrounding areas.

The process consisted of stripping the building interior of any retainable materials, wetting the area down as method of dust control, using an excavator to break down the structure and carrying out an organized hauling plan to efficiently transport materials off-site. Following the removal of the above-ground structure, excavation work will continue to dig up the building foundations.

Recently, Metrolinx shared a blog story on setting up a modern ticketing trailer and washrooms on site, to help ensure there are no service interruptions for passengers as work continues on the new station building.

With the old building removed and the work area cleared, improvements can continue on the west platform as well as the exterior of the new station building. The extra space also provides room for all construction activities to be carried out safely.

While the old building had many memories, the transit stop will get a fresh look to take it, and customers, into the future.

The new station building will welcome customers with updated amenities, spacious and well-lit waiting areas and a more comfortable experience.

Agincourt’s full transformation is expected to be complete by fall 2021 – though timing is always subject to change.
