Metrolinx project will increase GO Train service and boost safety for Burlington and Oakville.

June 10 – As part of GO Expansion, Metrolinx is building a new train bridge on Burloak Drive to help increase GO Train service on the Lakeshore West Line.

In collaboration with the City of Burlington and the Town of Oakville this work is vital to supporting more frequent two-way, all-day GO service on the Lakeshore West Line.

This new bridge, known as a grade separation, will allow vehicles to pass under the train tracks, making train service more predictable by allowing trains to pass through the area without interruption.

Once complete, the bridge will allow Metrolinx to safely increase the number of trains on the line, bringing more frequent service for customers.

Road closure and train schedule change

Crews are now preparing to build a temporary diversion track, which is necessary in order for trains to continue operating on the Lakeshore West Line during construction of the grade separation.

This key piece of work requires a road closure of Burloak Drive for 10 days, from June 14-24, 2024. The road will be completely closed at all times, except from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday to Friday, when it will be open for southbound traffic only.

The closure will take place between Harvester and Wyecroft Roads, and just north of Prince William Drive and Superior Court. The intersection of Burloak and Prince William Drive will remain open to traffic during the closure.

For more information, please find the construction notice here.

Weekend GO Train service will also be modified to accommodate the upcoming work. On some weekends in June, Lakeshore West service will be adjusted to hourly train service between Oakville and West Harbour GO stations. By reducing some service now, Metrolinx will be able to unlock more service in the future.

Burloak train bridge benefits

The grade separation will deliver several key benefits for both Oakville and Burlington:

  • Reduce congestion and delays, as vehicles will no longer have to wait for trains to pass.
  • Increase safety for GO Train passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles by separating a high-traffic roadway and a busy rail line.
  • Widen Burloak Drive, creating space for on-street bicycle lanes, a multi-use path along the boulevard and the possibility to expand from four to six vehicle lanes in the future.

The new grade separation project also includes intersection and roadway widening at Superior Court and Prince William Drive, and minor widening improvements at Harvester and Wyecroft roads.

Early works for the grade separation are currently underway. This work includes relocating and protecting utilities, protecting trees, and more minor track work.
