Demolition of Progress Avenue bridge will support construction of new station.

Construction work to extend the TTC’s Line 2 subway 7.8 kilometres farther into Scarborough continues this summer with the upcoming removal of the Progress Avenue bridge above McCowan Road near Scarborough Town Centre.

Scarborough Centre Station – one of three brand new stations along the Scarborough Subway Extension – will deliver modern and reliable rapid transit directly to the heart of Scarborough. Once completed, more than 10,000 customers are expected to use the station at peak times.

What’s happening

The first step in building this future transit hub is the removal of the Progress Avenue bridge over McCowan Road.

Removing the Progress Avenue bridge will clear the area for excavation and construction of the underground station box, which will begin later in 2024.

To prepare for this work, the Bushby Drive and Progress Avenue ramps to McCowan Road will be permanently closed early August, followed by the closure of the Progress Avenue bridge on Aug. 16.

Detours will remain in place until work on Scarborough Centre Station is complete, at which point Progress Avenue will be reinstated at ground level with a new controlled intersection at McCowan Road.

Weekend closure of McCowan Road

From Aug. 30 to Sept. 3, McCowan Road will fully close from Bushby Drive to Corporate Drive to allow for the demolition of the Progress Avenue bridge. The closure will begin at 8 p.m. on Aug. 30 and continue until 5 a.m. on Sept. 3.

Buses will continue to be able to access Triton Road, and drivers will continue to be able to access the southbound McCowan offramp to get to Scarborough Town Centre.

Better transit connections

The more than 30,000 students who attend Centennial College’s Progress Campus and the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus stand to significantly benefit from improved transit connections in Scarborough Centre. The station’s large bus terminal will provide seamless access to TTC bus routes that serve important employment and educational destinations in the local area.

Regional busses will also serve this station, with connections to GO Transit.
