Safety measures implemented at Scarborough rail crossing on the Lakeshore East Line.

June 10 - Last week, after a near miss incident involving a truck transporting chemicals to Dow Chemical Company and a GO Train at the Manse Road Rail Crossing, Metrolinx is undertaking a full-scale safety assessment. As a result of this extremely concerning incident, we will be implementing the following measures in this area effective immediately while this assessment is underway:

  • Reinstating the requirement for train whistles at the crossing; and
  • Limiting train speeds to no more than 50 miles per hour when entering the crossing in both directions.

Transport Canada requires the implementation of whistles in any situation where unsafe conditions affect the rail corridor. Metrolinx will continue to work collaboratively with Dow Chemical to ensure the safety of passengers, train crews and the public.
