Hazel McCallion Line progress through 2024
Progress continues across the 18-kilometre light rail line to create a more connected Peel region.
Dec 27, 2024
As 2024 wraps up, the Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit (LRT) project has continued to progress. From advancements in trackwork and the new LRT station at Port Credit to the completion of the Eaglewood Bridge and other infrastructure upgrades, this year has brought a more connected transit system closer to reality.
Continued trackwork transformation
On the project, the installation of LRT tracks has been advancing steadily.
Key intersections from Derry Road to Square One Drive, and from Queensway to Mineola, witnessed a lot of progress over the past year. Construction crews continue to lay more tracks along the 18-kilometre transit line and the tracks connecting trains to the operations and maintenance facility.
Progress of the guideway isn’t limited to the tracks alone. Multiple LRT stop platforms such as Robert Spec, Fairview, Eglinton, Bristol, Matheson, Britannia, Courtneypark, and Derry stops have been completed.
Port Credit Station advances
At Port Credit, the only underground station on the line, developments have also taken shape. Above ground, landscaping and drainage improvements are enhancing the station's surroundings, while canopy installation is underway. Below ground, the platform level is nearing completion with painting, flooring installation well advanced, and key details like doors and hardware being added.
Structural work at the service level is almost complete, with drywall and ceilings in place. These finishing touches ensure the station will be fully operational and ready to seamlessly connect with Port Credit GO Station.
A new connection for communities
The opening of the new Eaglewood Boulevard Bridge took place in the summer of 2024, replacing the decommissioned Inglewood Bridge near Mary Fix Creek. This modern infrastructure, featuring a signalized intersection, enhances accessibility for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists and will allow the future trains travelling along the line to easily access Port Credit Station. It’s a vital piece of the Hazel McCallion LRT project, fostering better connections on either side of Hurontario Street.
Elevated Guideway key developments
The elevated guideway over Highway 403 saw significant progress in 2024. Earlier in the year, the substructure—comprising of numerous abutments and piers—was completed. By late October, crews finalized and installed girders, the critical horizontal beams that form the backbone of the superstructure and support the load of the LRT vehicles when crossing the Highway 403 interchange.
Mary Fix Creek
In addition to transit infrastructure, the Hazel McCallion LRT project includes upgrades to surrounding areas like Mary Fix Creek, which is being redesigned to manage 100-year flood events.
Over 400 metres of creek bed have been formed, with higher and wider walls enhancing flood prevention. While much of the work has been concentrated south of Eaglewood Boulevard, recent progress has extended north toward Peel Gardens Park. Half of the creek bed is poured, with the remaining work, including walls and backfilling, slated for completion early next year.
Stay tuned for updates and developments along the Hazel McCallion Line in 2025.
