How new tech keeps customers moving on busy platforms

The tool that makes tapping off simple, fast and personable.

Aug 16, 2024

It’s happened to the best of us. You take a journey on the GO or UP Express, and in the excitement of arriving at your destination, you may have forgotten to tap off. That means you’ll be charged the fare all the way to the final stop of the line or bus route you traveled on.

There are some ways to avoid this. If you’re using the PRESTO app, setting a default trip is the simplest solution, or you can contact us to request a refund.

But we’re making it easier than ever for passengers with an innovative new device called the Station Ambassador (SA) Tool.

What is the SA Tool?

Keeping you moving safely is top of mind for us. This new, handheld device helps our talented Station Ambassadors meet you where you are, right as you step off the train or bus.

The SA Tool is no bigger than a mobile phone. It allows Station Ambassadors to process transactions such as taking fare payments, adjusting PRESTO settings, and validating fares from anywhere at the station.

Beyond that, it also gives them quick access to tools like GO Tracker to help them help you get where you need to go, faster.

How does it work?

The SA Tool is built around a custom smartphone-sized handheld computer. We install a PRESTO card reader on the back for fare-based functions like tapping on and tapping off, fare inspections, and adjusting PRESTO card settings. It also allows Station Ambassadors to accept fare payment from Google Wallet, Apple Wallet, debit and credit cards.

Our Station Ambassadors are also equipped with small pocket-sized printers and handheld payment terminals to issue items such as paper tickets and receipts as needed.

What’s more, the device gives them access to the Public Address (PA) system at stations, allowing them to share important updates with customers.

While PRESTO terminals and ticket vending machines still serve as the main point of interaction for riders, the SA Tool provides a full suite of fare transaction capabilities, including features that are not available on self-serve devices, such as setting concessions, providing ticket adjustments, issuing refunds, and more.

Of course, you can always tap off at any PRESTO terminal at your destination station, or through any Station Ambassador. During peak travel time and special events, you’ll find more Station Ambassadors present on platforms, keeping things safe, secure and moving.

Taking transit should be easy, affordable and convenient. Thanks to new tech like the SA Tool, we’re making your daily commute as seamless as possible.
