Work is moving along on the future Hazel McCallion light rail transit (LRT) line.  

Starting in September, tracks will be laid along the centre of Hurontario Street, where construction will occur at every other intersection to allow for detours.  

This is a key sign of progress for the 18-kilometre rapid transit line.  

Although the first tracks went in earlier this year at the operations, maintenance and storage facility (OMSF), this is the first track installation along the LRT guideway where the light rail vehicles will run on Hurontario Street.  

The ongoing partial intersection closures will restrict drivers from turning left in both directions while driving along Hurontario Street and unable to cross Hurontario at staged intersections.  

With this approach, the track installations can occur quickly and more efficiently with less impact overall. 

Once the track is laid, the intersections will reopen with no more than two consecutive intersections being closed at the same time. 

• Work will begin at Milverton Drive/Watline Avenue and Hurontario Street on Aug. 28 until Sept. 16  
• A partial closure at Sandstone Drive/Brunel Road and Hurontario Street will begin on Sept. 6 until Sept. 28  

Both intersections are projected to be completed by Oct. 2022.  

• Intersection track installation will continue along Hurontario at Aldridge Street/Traders Boulevard East and Matheson Boulevard. 

What is the Hazel McCallion LRT? 

The Hazel McCallion Line, also called the Hurontario LRT, will bring an environmentally friendly and reliable transportation system to Mississauga and Brampton.  

It will connect to major transit systems, including GO Transit, the Mississauga Transitway, Brampton Transit, ZUM and MiWay. With 19 stops, it will operate in its own dedicated lane to ensure a smooth and convenient ride along one of the busiest streets in the region.
