The new Toronto interchange station will serve approximately 100,000 daily riders.

March 14 - The contract has been awarded for the East Harbour Transit Hub, a new station coming to Toronto’s east end that will connect customers to Lakeshore East and Stouffville GO train service and the future Ontario Line subway in one location.

This transformative public transit project will provide a greater choice of reliable and convenient options to shorten commutes and make life more convenient for the Riverdale, Riverside and Leslieville communities, Torontonians, and visitors alike.

As Metrolinx works to expand GO train service, customers could see trains arriving at the East Harbour Transit Hub as frequently as every five minutes during the busiest travel hour. Combined with Ontario Line users, the station is expected to serve about 100,000 daily riders.

Together with the Ontario Line, East Harbour will let commuters bypass Union Station, helping to reduce crowding there by up to 14 per cent – or 14,000 people – overall during the busiest travel hour.

Located in the Riverdale neighbourhood, immediately east of the Don Valley Parkway and south of Eastern Avenue, the benefits of the East Harbour Transit Hub will include:

  • A concourse area for easy transfers between GO and Ontario Line services
  • Accessible passenger pick-up and drop-off area
  • A staffed customer service area
  • Bike parking
  • Convenient single train connections to Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa, as well as destinations such as Mississauga, Oakville and Hamilton
  • Connections to the future Broadview Avenue extension

Construction activities

In 2023, construction crews began preliminary work to prepare the site for the start of major construction, including the demolition and reconstruction of the Eastern Avenue bridge to widen the rail corridor to support both GO Transit and the future Ontario Line subway. The bridge will support six tracks — four for GO and two for the Ontario Line — and three island platforms — two for GO and one for the Ontario Line.

The next phase of construction will see work commence on the main station for the hub.

Alliance contract model

The project is being delivered through an Alliance contracting model. Metrolinx and Rail Connect Partners (a joint venture of AtkinsRéalis and Bird Construction) are leading construction alongside Hatch Ltd.

The Alliance contracting model is a progressive, collaborative form of Public-Private Partnership (P3) project delivery — where a public sector agency works collaboratively with private sector parties to share all risks and responsibilities in delivering a project. The Alliance partnership promotes a collaborative culture, unanimous decision-making, and requires all participants to find the best solutions for the project.

In addition, the hub will be integrated into a new adjacent Transit Oriented Community, being developed by Cadillac Fairview. The 38-acre site will include the creation of a major employment centre expected to bring more than 50,000 jobs, as well as new residential and commercial space, community amenities and parkland.
