Public transit is for everyone.

For those travelling with a cane, a support animal, or without any assistance – getting around on GO Transit or UP Express should be equitable for people of all needs.

That’s why Metrolinx partnered with the Ontario Public Transit Association (OPTA) to raise awareness about accessibility on transit.

Through the EnAbling Change campaign, which launches on GO Transit and UP Express today (Mar. 21), OPTA and transit agency partners across the province are raising awareness of transit accessibility features, encouraging customers to consider the needs of others and promoting compliance with Ontario’s accessibility standards.

Advisory committees on accessibility across the province, including Metrolinx’s Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC), were consulted as the campaign materials were being developed to ensure that the messaging and visuals were appropriate and clear.

Here’s a look at some of the materials customers will see on their commutes and online.

The campaign is spearheaded by the Ontario Public Transit Association (OPTA), a member-driven trade organization whose objective is to raise awareness of the importance of public transit to communities, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and the economy.

Metrolinx and accessibility

Metrolinx is committed to making GO Transit and UP Express easy to use for everyone by striving to offer accessible trains, buses, and stations along with trained staff to help customers with disabilities use services independently or with a support person.

There are currently four stations on the GO network that are not accessible, and work continues on the improvements needed to make these stations accessible.

In most cases, station improvements are being delivered as part of the GO Expansion capital program. As the GO Expansion program continues to evolve, project scope and timelines are subject to change.

At the end of the day, public transportation is there to get people from A to B as easily as possible.
