On Metrolinx’s light rail transit projects, experts continue to take measures to make sure safety is a priority – especially as winter months approach.

That focus is on worker safety, while asking pedestrians and drivers to take care – including having patience during delays or detours, as crews try their best to keep everyone moving.

The Hurontario LRT Project

On the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, crews are prepping sites in order to keep them fully functional during the challenges of winter. This includes stocking up on salt and anti-slip materials in advance of the first snowfall, coordinating snowplow services with municipalities, ensuring workers are properly trained to handle propane for heating and implementing warm up breaks throughout the day.

It isn’t just construction crews that need to be winter ready. It’s always important for commuters to remember to exercise caution around sites, especially during the winter months when snow and ice might be a hazard.

Crosstown

On the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project, crews have implemented a new traffic configuration at the Yonge and Eglinton intersection. A portion of the sidewalk on the west side of Yonge Street, south of Eglinton, is closed. The east-west crosswalk on the south side of the intersection will also remain closed. During this time, the crosswalks on the north, east, and west sides of the intersection will remain open. This configuration will be in place for the next nine months.

A reminder to only cross at signalized intersections and drivers should obey all construction signage.

Finch West

Crews on the Finch West LRT project also continue to work through the winter months. While Toronto has yet to be hit with really heavy snow, constructor, Mosaic Transit Group, has a plan in place for when storms hit. Snow removal for the Finch West LRT project includes plowing streets, sidewalks, temporary pathways, bus stops (both temporary and permanent) during and immediately after a storm.

This work is done in coordination with the City of Toronto to ensure areas are cleared for everyone, whether walking, driving, catching the bus or simply passing through.

Just as these projects continue construction safely throughout the winter, commuters are reminded to do their part too. Continue to follow all detour signs around construction zones and stay on designated paths and roadways.
