Road closures coming to Hurontario Street

Here are the changes coming as crews make progress on the Hurontario light rail transit route.

Mar 14, 2022

Take care – detours ahead.

If you’re driving through the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) project corridor – there are road changes coming.

Crews need to relocate utility services out from under the guideway, where the light rail vehicle will travel, to help prevent interruption during major construction and also enables easier repair once the transit route is in service.

Utility relocation also allows for telecommunication companies to upgrade their own services – a benefit for residents in the area.

Many of these utilities cross intersections, which at times results in crews closing a portion of the road as they safely and efficiently relocate those utilities.

Metrolinx works closely with municipal and regional partners anytime road closures are required. Collaboration is crucial to implementing them efficiently, while minimizing the overall impact to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Metrolinx ensures that emergency vehicles always have adequate access while construction works take place.

Upcoming closures

Work at Bristol Road and Hurontario Street is scheduled for the following weekend beginning Saturday, March 19 to Sunday, March 20. During this work, construction will be limited to the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days. During these works a detour will always be provided to ensure access to all properties. Motorists can access Bristol Road from Hurontario Street using a detour route via Glenn Hawthorne Boulevard and Huntingfield Drive.

Temporary weekday closures

As construction crews continue to relocate sanitary lines along Hurontario Street in Cooksville, Metrolinx will also be required to close Floradale Drive at Hurontario Street. The closure is expected to take place from Monday, March 14, and last until Friday, March 18, weather permitting. Construction hours will be limited from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Access to the Floradale Drive will be available via a detour from Hurontario Street to King Street West and Confederation Parkway.

On Monday, March 21 and Tuesday, March 22, Metrolinx will also be required to close a portion of Agnes Street at Hurontario Street. The closure will be in place for the two days, however construction will be limited from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The crosswalk will also remain open for pedestrians to use. Drivers are cautioned that Cook Street is a one-way street so there is a northbound and a southbound detour for this closure.

Metrolinx knows closures and detours impact community members’ day-to-day lives. Crews will continue to maintain at least one vehicular access to every property and there are pedestrian detours in place. With construction progressing along the corridor, it’s important to take the time to travel, be aware of the changing surroundings and follow the signage in place.

Upcoming work and closures are also shared through the Metrolinx website, social media and by e-mail.  Sign up here for the Peel Region e-newsletter to stay up to date on all upcoming work.
