At a venue used to exciting moments, the announcement was a winning ticket.

The Ontario government and Metrolinx are partnering with Woodbine Entertainment Group to build a new GO station near Woodbine race track.

The official announcement was made on March 6 at an event at the Woodbine track.

Soon after, it began to gain traction on social media.

The new GO station will increase transit access to Humber College, University of Guelph at Humber, and Etobicoke General Hospital.

According to Metrolinx CEO Phil Verster the new station – which will be on the Kitchener GO line – is expected to significantly increase ridership on the GO Transit network.

“This station will be used nearly 15,000 times a day – with 40 per cent of those trips coming from new customers,” Verster said.

As part of Metrolinx’s new transit-oriented development (TOD) approach to building transit, Woodbine Entertainment Group has committed to pay for the construction costs of the new station.

“This is the type of investment that allows us to deliver more for our customers at a lower cost,” said Verster.

The new GO station at Woodbine will feature:

• Platforms with weather protection
• A parking lot for GO commuter use
• Passenger pick-up and drop off area
• A bus loop and passenger waiting areas for seamless transfers to GO and local transit services running north-south along Highway 27
