Building a major transit project on Mississauga’s busiest street takes a lot of coordination and communication.

Sometimes it even involves closing the street, to get things done quickly without cars zooming by. We’ll get to the street closure shortly, but first a quick update on some of the work going on with the Hurontario LRT.

Construction crews working on the Hurontario LRT project have already started relocating all of the utility services from under the roadway between south of the Port Credit GO Station in Mississauga, all the way to Bartley Bull Parkway in Brampton.

Work to relocate a large portion of electrical, gas and telecommunication lines was done early in the project, now the community is seeing the work to relocate the sewers in a few different areas.

This utility work is being done ahead of building the LRT system down the center of Hurontario Street. They are moved out of the way so they can be accessed, repaired, or replaced without interruption when the LRT is operational.

Just moving utilities alone has taken planning, coordination, and communication across all levels within Metrolinx, the constructor Mobilinx, the City of Mississauga, the Region of Peel and even the public.

Over the next few nights (Aug. 9–13), a nightly road closure will occur on Hurontario Street, between Inglewood Drive and Mineola Road. This will be a full closure and will occur from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

While the road is closed, crews will install the sewer line – once they’re done, the road will then by repaved.

During the closure, pedestrians will still be able to walk along the sidewalks.

While regular traffic will be detoured via Mineola Road, crews will maintain one open lane of traffic along Hurontario Street for emergency and transit services to get through with the assistance of Peel Police.

To minimize impacts to the surrounding neighbourhood and businesses, excavated areas will be plated and the roadway will re-open daily at 6 a.m.

A daytime closure would cause large traffic backups, so planning shifted to a temporary, overnight closure. Overnight work comes with a few benefits. With less traffic on the road, crews can accelerate the work, completing it in less time with less safety risks.  

Metrolinx and Mobilinx were onsite at the Port Credit Classic Car Thursday event letting event participants know about the closure to encourage an alternate route home if they are staying past 10 p.m.
