Ahead of the May long weekend, south Mississauga residents are being asked to stay away from the Credit River rail bridge.

The 60m (200 ft) train bridge that spans the Credit River adjacent to Port Credit Memorial Park has become a go-to spot for unsafe activities and gatherings.

Over the May long weekend last year alone, 160 people were removed or prevented from accessing the Port Credit rail bridge.

Metrolinx installed upgraded fencing in the area last fall to deter would-be thrill seekers. The eight-foot-tall fence is made of special anti-climbing material that is also designed to be difficult to cut or damage.

As in the past, Metrolinx community relations teams have also made numerous trips to the nearby Port Credit Memorial Park to speak to the public, and especially parents who may not be aware of the risks jumping off the rail bridge poses to young people.

Residents will see increased enforcement patrols by Metrolinx and Peel Regional Police over the coming weeks in the area.

The transit agency has also reached out to schools in the area to help raise awareness about the issue.

Metrolinx has also installed anti-trespassing mats at the nearby Stavebank Road train crossing and is monitoring the corridor with a nearby camera.
